Anyone ever suffered neck muscle spasms and strain?
Ok, so today, I fell on the ice, trying to get into my car. I went to the hospital after a few hours, because my neck began hurting VERY badly. They (after waiting 2 hours) finally said I was having muscle spasms and that my neck muscles were strained.
I can’t lift or move my neck. For anyone who has ever had these (simple) things, how long did it last? The prescriptions meds haven’t touched the pain yet.
Thanks!
Lol…these are no “simple things,” especially in the neck area. Pain in the neck can be a real..pain in the neck!
You poor thing. I feel for ya’! That sucks. You probably tweaked or jarred the muscles and they promptly clenched up and went into spasm. Neck pain can be excruciating and there is little in Western Medicine that can touch it.
Muscles spasms are a specifically difficult problem, as there is no pharmaceutical that deals with muscle spasms, due tot heir troublesome nature. The spasms cause pain and the pain causes the spasms. Breaking that cycle is key.
You could use what used to be Acetagesic, or may go by Percogesic now as an OTC. I use Advil for when I sleep wrong and tweak my neck. I take one with food before bed and try position my neck to rehab itself during the night (when the body does its repairs).
If it is really bad, you’ll need help with it.
Call in some favors and have yourself massaged out – that means, until the stiff and knotted muscles soften and loosen, which the person massaging will be able to feel by hand. Hand massage works best, as the person can feel their progress and the muscles softening. This may need to be done each day until the cycles stop triggering and it gets better.
Another option is acupuncture. For muscles and spasms, people swear by this. they can even hook a machine up to the needles they insert that send electrical impulses and heat right into those muscles.
Something to also consider is chiropractic…as you may have thrown your spine out of whack and that is the root cause of the neck pain. I injured my lower back cycling (without stretching first, like a bonehead) and really goofed myself up, couldn’t walk upright or sit or drive. Chiropractic a few times got me on the road to recovery.
If you feel, you probably jarred your spine and that musculature around it. Chiropractic might be your best first place to start. Maybe combine that with acupuncture – or just do the chiro. Take an Advil before bed if you can handle ibuprofen (always take it with food as it can cause stomach bleeding!) and try to position your neck on your pillow where it is comfortable and stick with that position for the night.
Consider getting a neck pillow, if you don’t have one. The U-shaped pillows, but one that offers some decent support, not a marshmallow. I find I use this most nights, just because it keeps your neck and head in the ideal position to foster ease and relaxation of muscles. The pillow allows you to just set your neck into the channel and “forget about it.” The alignment is automatic. I love mine.
My money is on the fact you jarred your spine and I would bet the chiro is the best first place to start. You could wait it out, but rarely does neck pain spontaneously just vanish on its own. If you threw out the upper vertebrae, the muscles will continue to freak until those vertebrae get back into their given places, as musculature can reflect that the spine is out of alignment (duh, right?). The do what they do and all of a sudden the pain is just…gone. Freaky, but magical – and the relief…goodness!!!!!! Totally worth the money and it is natural, too! What’s not to like. Once the vertebrae get back into their rightful position, the tension on the muscles and the spine just vanishes almost completely. Three times of this can make a huge difference.
Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose to do. Definitely no picnic. I really hope you feel better soon, just reading your post made me grimace!
Take vitamins daily and drink plenty of water to help your muscles stay hydrated and rehabilitate themselves.
